Offseason exercising

No, this isn't a blog about what I am doing this offseason to stay in shape (or lack thereof). Instead, I'm reporting on a mock draft I did with the guys at FantasyFootballXtreme.com.

We mocked it up -- 12 teams, 14 rounds, standard scoring. We started the day after the Super Bowl.

Here are my picks (I went 10th in serpentine draft).

1. Clinton Portis, RB, WAS
Why him?: Last high-touch RB left on the board who still gets goal-line touches. I did not like making this pick.
Passed over: Willis McGahee (probably should have taken him), Ryan Grant, Marshawn Lynch, Reggie Bush, Marion Barber, Willie Parker.

2. Willie Parker, RB, PIT
Why him?: Couldn't pass on his potential. Should up his TDs from 2007's two.
Passed over: Marion Barber, Earnest Graham, All WRs

3. Marques Colston, WR, NO
Why him?: Last youngish big-play No. 1 WR left on the board, and he's a third-year player in a contract year in 2008. I am expecting huge stats.
Passed over: Torry Holt, Wes Welker, Roy Williams

4. Greg Jennings, WR, GB
Why him?: Should continue to develop into quality receiver for Packers. Last of the No. 1s available.
Passed over: Brandon Marshall, Laurence Maroney, Anquan Boldin, Tony Romo, Antonio Gates

5 and 6, respectively: Travis Henry and Selvin Young, RBs, DEN
Why them?: Just trying to cover my bases on Denver runners. Can't remember the last time a Broncos RB went this late in drafts (could it be 2006?). Best case: Henry starts elsewhere and Young starts in Denver. Worst case: Broncos trade up for Darren McFadden.
Passed over: Calvin Johnson, Derek Anderson, Thomas Jones, Donald Driver

7. Brett Favre, QB, GB
Why him?: I needed a quarterback, and I am convinced he will come back for one more year based on the talent the Packers have and might still add. But I made this pick knowing I had to back him up properly.
Passed over: Donovan McNabb, Vernon Davis

8. Bernard Berrian, WR, FA
Why him?: He's going to sign somewhere to be a No. 1 receiver. Anywhere is better than Chicago.
Passed over: Bobby Engram, Reggie Williams, Santana Moss, Todd Heap

9. Jamaal Charles, RB, ROOKIE
Why him?: I'm a huge fan of his and think he can be a complete NFL back as soon as this year.
Passed over: Eli Manning

10. Matt Schaub, QB, HOU
Why him?: I am a big believer in him and expect big things from him -- if he can stay healthy.
Passed over: Jay Cutler, Matt Leinart, David Garrard, Jake Delhomme

11. Heath Miller, TE, PIT
Why him?: I needed a tight end, he's pretty good. Not a pick I loved.
Passed over: DeShaun Foster, Cadillac Williams

12. Nate Burleson, WR, SEA
Why him?: Another player I expect big things from in 2008.
Passed over: Chargers DST, Donte Stallworth

13 and 14. Packers DST and Nick Folk

NOTES:

No. 1 pick: Adrian Peterson; LaDainian Tomlinson was second

Tom Brady went 5th overall, Peyton Manning went 8th overall ... next QB was Tony Romo in the fourth round, an absolute steal. Carson Palmer was next at the last pick in Round 4.

Michael Turner went 25th overall (first pick in Round 3).

Darren McFadden went 31st overall (seventh pick in Round 3). Rashard Mendenhall was the second rookie taken (55th overall -- seventh pick in Round 5), and Jonathan Stewart went after him.

11 of 12 picks in Round 14 were kickers. That's the way it should be.
